Metalwork has been a passion of mine since my first welding class with the realization that my creative ideas can come to life in metal. As with many things in life it is the spontaneity and adventure that makes the journey so exciting. As I transform my ideas through glass and/or metal I never cease to be fascinated by its evolution as I create considering the possibilities of conceptual variation for future pieces. I believe in the importance of a creative construction process open to change, allowing an idea to branch out and fully blossom as the piece or the series develops.

For inspiration, I begin the creative process in paper prior to starting a new piece. I am intrigued by the positive and negative interplay between shapes emphasizing form against form. This interaction works especially well fusing enamel on metal. Enameling drew me into the glass world. Like liquid candy, blowing glass in the hot shop was exciting. Then I became interested in flameworking after I moved to Seattle in 1991 allowing utilization of my glass working skills with the torch using borosilicate glass rods and tubes. Glass and metal are quite complimentary, particularly when used in conjunction with lighting. Metals strength supports and sets the stage for the gorgeous translucent qualities of glass which when illuminated shares the dance of light waves off their shiny reflective surfaces projecting an ambiance to be enjoyed by all.

As for my long-term goals, I specialize in functional pieces including lighting in glass and metalwork and continue to create larger sculptural pieces for public artwork.
