The Women’s Shelter Jewelry Project solicits donations of any and all jewelry to sort, clean, repair, and give to Seattle-area women’s shelters and the YWCA Dress for Success Program.
Members of the Seattle Metals Guild, and their friends, volunteer to do the sorting and cleaning.
“It was just terrific to receive this,” said Ciara Murphy, director of Catherine Booth House, “Often women come here with just the clothes on their backs. They’re lucky if they have time to gather the bare essentials together, let alone jewelry. Recently the police brought a woman to us who had been pushed out of a moving car by her abuser – she didn’t even have her purse.”
To sign up for these fun sessions or to donate jewelry email: Micki Lippe: mickilippe@comcast.net.
With the help of volunteers we are teaching a series of jewelry classes to women living in residence shelters. The classes are aimed at giving the women a positive experience by creating jewelry that brings a sense of accomplishment and a therapeutic creative outlet. These classes are another way to give back to the community and to those who are less fortunate.

How did u start this. I am from Ohio what a fabulous idea
Laurie,
Well, I wanted to do some sort of volunteer work and it seemed to make the most sense to do something that used my jewelry skills. When we lived in Oklahoma a neighbor shot her husband when he came home and abused her for the second time that night. She went to jail because they said it was premeditated but was later released because of the efforts of a women’s group that took up her cause. That would not happen today but it made me realize how desperate these women are. I know that when they decide to go to a shelter, they often take nothing. Nothing. Most every women likes a little piece of jewelry and most women have jewelry that they are not wearing. I can help you set up something in your area. Are you a jeweler?
I too would like to know how you got your project off the ground. I think it is a marvelous idea and would like to start this in my area (Covington, GA – near Atlanta). Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Abbie Walter
