The Phillip Baldwin Scholarship
As you may know, the Seattle Metals Guild has worked with Layne Goldsmith, the wife of former Guild member Phillip Baldwin, to raise funds for an endowed scholarship in his name. Our recent exhibition, From Wave to Shining Wave, celebrated his life and legacy by showcasing works made by members featuring his special mokume-gane material creations as Shining Wave Metals. The proceeds from our material purchases were set aside for inclusion as contributions to this fund. Together, we were able to raise thousands of dollars toward making this fund a reality.
A recent update from Layne shares her news: “Thanks in a very large part, your purchase of Phillip’s mokume has made it possible to establish the endowed scholarship at Penland. Again, you all made this dream a reality!”
Laura R. Laughridge, Penland’s Chief Advancement Officer, has also shared an update with us, which we’re happy to share here with the Guild’s members and followers:
“We are very pleased to report that the Phillip Baldwin Endowed Scholarship in Iron and Metal Smithing is now a reality. Layne Goldsmith has been in discussions with me for about a year with regard to establishing this fund. We are deeply grateful to Layne and to you and others who have worked hard to make this scholarship a reality. Phillip Baldwin was well known on our campus. We are honored to award this scholarship as his legacy.
As an endowed fund, this scholarship will exist in perpetuity. Our plan is to begin awarding it a year from now. Our endowment spending policy requires that funds be in place for one year to generate earnings that can then be awarded. Typically, our awards are 5% of the three year rolling average of the fund's total value. In good market conditions, the fund, at $75K, should provide $3,750, roughly the cost of tuition, room, and board for one student to take a two-week workshop here at Penland.
Now that the scholarship has been established, we created this link for Layne so that others--friends and family members--can make memorials and add to the fund. The larger the fund's principal, the larger the award we will be able to make.”
